Head hitting concrete and mushrooming the line

A string trimmer line mushrooms when its exposed end becomes flattened, swollen, or split after repeated impact with a hard surface. Concrete can cause this quickly because it wears the nylon line through impact and friction. If the head itself is hitting the concrete, check the line length, head condition, guard setup, and trimming angle before continuing.

Stop the trimmer, disconnect the battery or spark plug as applicable, and wait for the head to stop completely before inspecting it. Wear gloves when handling the line or head.

Why the line mushrooms on concrete

The line is designed to flex against grass and light weeds. Concrete is much harder and can:

  • Flatten the line end through repeated impacts
  • Generate heat that softens and deforms the nylon
  • Wear the line unevenly until it becomes too short or lumpy to feed
  • Damage the eyelets, spool, or cutting head if the head repeatedly scrapes the surface

A small amount of wear is normal when trimming along pavement. Rapid mushrooming usually means the line is contacting the concrete too aggressively or the setup is not correct.

Check the line first

Remove the damaged section or replace the spool if the line is badly flattened. Then check the replacement line against the trimmer and head instructions.

Confirm the line diameter

Line that is too thin may wear quickly against concrete. Line that is too thick can overload the head or motor, fail to feed correctly, and make the trimmer work harder. Use only a diameter approved for your specific trimmer and head.

The line material and shape also affect wear. Round line is a common general-purpose choice. Some heads accept other shapes, but a square, twisted, or serrated line should not be used unless the manufacturer permits it.

Check for heat damage

If the line is fused together on the spool, has a melted-looking surface, or will not feed through the eyelets, remove it and reload the head. Avoid forcing stuck line out with a sharp tool that could damage the spool or eyelet.

On some nylon lines, soaking the line as directed by the line or trimmer manufacturer can help reduce brittleness. Do not soak a prewound spool unless its instructions specifically allow it.

Inspect the trimmer head and eyelets

With the power disconnected, look for:

  • A cracked or warped spool
  • Worn line-release openings
  • Sharp grooves or damaged eyelets
  • A loose retaining cap or bump knob
  • Grass, dirt, or line packed inside the head
  • A head that wobbles when turned by hand

A damaged eyelet can cut or pinch the line, causing it to mushroom near the outlet. A loose head can also sit at an angle and scrape the ground. Clean packed debris and tighten parts according to the owner's manual. Replace a cracked spool, badly worn eyelet, or loose head rather than continuing to operate it.

Check the line length and cutting guard

A trimmer's guard usually includes a line-cutting blade that limits the working length. If the line is loaded too long, the head may strike the concrete or the motor may slow when you start trimming.

Make sure the guard is installed in the correct position and that its cutting blade is present and unobstructed. Never remove the guard to gain more cutting width. It helps control line length and protects you from thrown debris.

If the line is repeatedly extending beyond the guard's intended cutting length, the bump-feed mechanism may be releasing too much line, or the head may be assembled incorrectly. Consult the manual for the correct winding direction and line-loading procedure.

Adjust how you hold the trimmer

Keep the head slightly above the pavement instead of resting it on the concrete. Use the edge of the line to trim grass near a curb, and keep the head level enough that the line—not the plastic housing—contacts the vegetation.

Helpful technique changes include:

  1. Run the trimmer at the speed recommended by the manufacturer.
  2. Move slowly enough that the line cuts grass without requiring repeated hard bumps.
  3. Avoid using the bump knob as a guide against the pavement.
  4. Tilt the head only as much as needed for edging; excessive tilt can make the line strike the concrete at a harsh angle.
  5. Use a dedicated edger for long, straight borders if you frequently work against concrete.

Do not deliberately bounce the head on pavement to advance the line. The bump mechanism is normally activated with a controlled tap as described in the manual, and repeated hard impacts accelerate wear.

Check for an incorrect head or attachment

A replacement universal head may not be compatible with the trimmer's shaft, guard, rotation direction, line diameter, or power output. If the problem began after installing a new head, reinstall the original head if it is safe to do so and compare the fit with the manufacturer's instructions.

For battery and electric models, an oversized or poorly matched head can cause excessive load. For gas models, it can also contribute to clutch or engine strain. Do not use a head or cutting attachment unless the trimmer manufacturer approves that type of accessory.

When the head itself is hitting concrete

A brief scrape may only indicate that the trimmer is being held too low. Repeated contact can mean:

  • The line is too short or not extending evenly
  • The spool or head is warped
  • The head retaining hardware is loose
  • The guard or head is installed incorrectly
  • The shaft or lower assembly is bent after an impact

Turn the head by hand with the power disconnected. It should not wobble significantly or bind. If the shaft, head, or guard appears bent, do not straighten a safety-critical part by force. Replace the approved part or have the trimmer inspected.

When to replace the line, head, or trimmer

Replace the line when it is mushroomed, brittle, fused, or too short to feed reliably. Replace the spool or head when the eyelets, bump knob, retaining cap, or housing are worn or cracked.

A replacement head is reasonable when the original no longer releases line evenly after cleaning and correct reloading. Replacing the entire trimmer makes more sense when the shaft is bent, the motor or engine is unusually noisy, the head continues to wobble with approved parts, or repairs approach the cost of a suitable replacement unit.

If the trimmer smells electrical, sparks, overheats, repeatedly trips a protection device, or continues running abnormally after the head is removed, stop using it. Follow the manufacturer's service instructions and use a qualified repair professional for electrical or internal motor faults.
