Line exploding out of a string trimmer spool is usually caused by incorrect winding, the wrong line diameter, overfilling, or a damaged spool or retaining cap. Turn the trimmer off and disconnect its power source before removing the head, then rewind the line according to the arrows and instructions molded into the spool.

Make the trimmer safe first

Before inspecting the spool:

  • Battery model: Remove the battery.
  • Corded model: Unplug it.
  • Gas model: Shut off the engine, let it cool, and disconnect the spark plug wire if the manufacturer’s instructions call for it.
  • Wear gloves when handling line and the cutting head.

Do not try to hold the spool in place while the trimmer is running. If the head is damaged or the line has wrapped around the drive shaft, stop using the trimmer until the problem is corrected.

Check the line and spool in order

1. Confirm the line diameter

Use only the line size specified for the trimmer and head. Line that is too thick can bind in the eyelets, overload the motor, or prevent the spool from turning correctly. Line that is too thin may feed too quickly and break or whip out of the head.

The correct diameter may be printed on the spool, head, guard, or owner’s manual. Do not assume that line sold for another trimmer will fit yours.

Also check the line type. Square, twisted, serrated, and round line can behave differently, and some heads are designed for particular line shapes.

2. Inspect the spool for crossed or loose wraps

Remove the spool and unwind the line. Look for:

  • Crossed sections
  • Loops that overlap unevenly
  • Line wound over the spool’s edge
  • Loose wraps that can unravel when the head spins
  • Line trapped outside the retaining grooves

A proper winding pattern should be even and firm, with each wrap sitting beside the previous one. Do not wind the line in random layers.

3. Wind in the direction shown on the spool

Most trimmer spools have an arrow showing the winding direction. Follow that arrow rather than guessing based on which way the head rotates.

Insert the line into the correct anchor hole or slot, leaving the amount specified by the manufacturer. Keep moderate tension on the line as you wind it. It should be snug enough to stay organized, but not so tight that it bends the spool or becomes difficult to release.

If the spool has two separate chambers, keep each line end in its own chamber. Do not let the lines cross between chambers.

4. Do not overfill the spool

Stop winding before the line reaches the spool’s outer rim. An overfilled spool can rub against the head, fail to seat correctly, or release a large loop when the trimmer starts.

The correct amount depends on the head design. Use the fill limit in the manual or leave the line below the specified edge if the spool provides a molded guide. If line repeatedly jumps over the rim, remove some line and try again.

5. Seat the line ends correctly

After winding, secure the line ends in the spool’s holding notches or slots. This keeps the wraps tight while you reinstall the spool.

Guide each end through the head’s eyelets as you install the spool. Make sure the spool sits fully down and that the retaining cap, bump knob, or cover locks into place. If the cap does not snap or thread on normally, do not force it; the spool may be installed incorrectly or a part may be damaged.

Check for a damaged head or retaining cap

If correctly wound line still flies out, inspect the head for physical damage. Look for:

  • Cracks in the spool
  • Worn or enlarged line eyelets
  • Broken retaining tabs
  • A missing spring
  • A cracked bump knob or cap
  • A spool that rocks instead of sitting flat
  • Line-cutting blades that are bent or missing from the guard

A cracked spool can release the entire line load as soon as the head spins. Replace the damaged spool or head with a part listed as compatible with your trimmer. Do not glue a cracked spinning component or substitute a cap that does not match the original design.

Check the trimmer guard and setup

The guard does not normally keep line inside the spool, but an incorrectly installed guard or line-cutting blade can contribute to poor line control. Confirm that:

  1. The guard is mounted in the orientation shown in the manual.
  2. The line-cutting blade is present and secure.
  3. The spool and cap are the correct parts for the head.
  4. The head is tightened as directed by the manufacturer.
  5. No grass, mud, or old line is packed around the head.

Never operate the trimmer without its required guard. The guard helps control debris and cuts excess line to the intended length.

If only one side of the line comes out

One-sided line release usually points to a winding or installation problem. Remove the spool and check that both line ends are the same approximate length and are routed through the correct eyelets. One end may have slipped out of its retaining notch, or the line may have crossed between spool chambers.

If the line releases immediately after installation, check that the spool is not upside down and that the retaining cap and spring are installed in the correct order.

If the line keeps unraveling after rewinding

Replace the spool or head when the plastic is worn, the retaining tabs no longer hold, or the spool will not stay seated. Replace the line if it has become brittle, kinked, heat-damaged, or contaminated with dirt that prevents smooth release.

A replacement head is reasonable when several components are worn or missing and the parts are difficult to identify separately. Match the replacement to the trimmer’s model and shaft connection rather than choosing a head solely by appearance.

If the line is installed correctly but the head wobbles, makes unusual mechanical noise, or spins unevenly, stop using the trimmer. The issue may involve the drive shaft, arbor, bearing, or motor, and a qualified repair professional may be needed.

Quick restart check

Before cutting grass again, confirm that:

  • The line diameter matches the manual.
  • The line is wound in the indicated direction.
  • The wraps are even and moderately tight.
  • The spool is not overfilled.
  • Both line ends pass through the eyelets.
  • The cap, spring, and spool are fully seated.
  • The guard and line-cutting blade are installed.
  • The head turns freely by hand with the power disconnected.

Start at low speed in an open area and stop immediately if the line begins to unravel, the head wobbles, or pieces of plastic come loose.
