What “line welding” means

Welded line is not an electrical problem. It is trimmer line that has softened, stuck to itself, or fused to the spool. When the head spins, the line can no longer feed through the eyelet. Common symptoms include:

  • The bump-feed head stops releasing line.
  • The line breaks inside the head.
  • The spool turns, but no line comes out.
  • A single section of line is stuck in a solid lump.
  • The line feeds unevenly or comes out in short pieces.

How to fix welded trimmer line

1. Shut down the trimmer safely

Turn off the trimmer and disconnect its power source. Remove the battery, unplug the tool, or disconnect the spark-plug wire on a gas model according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Wear gloves when handling the cutting head, and do not rely only on the trigger lock.

2. Remove the spool and inspect it

Open the trimmer head and take out the spool. Look for fused wraps, melted-looking spots, deep grooves, cracks, or a spool that is warped from heat. Also inspect the line eyelets and the spool’s retaining tabs.

If the spool is cracked, badly distorted, or cannot rotate freely, replacing the spool or complete head is safer than trying to reuse it.

3. Discard the affected line

Do not try to pull apart a large fused section and reload it. Cut away and discard the welded line. Even if it separates, the damaged section may be weak and likely to break again inside the head.

4. Check the line size and type

Use the line diameter, shape, and material listed in the trimmer’s manual or on the spool. Oversized line creates extra drag and can generate more heat. Line that is too small may feed too easily, break often, or fail to match the head’s retention system.

Do not substitute a heavier line just because it appears more durable. The motor, clutch, guard, and cutting head are designed for specific line sizes and may not handle a thicker line correctly.

5. Reload with even tension

Cut a fresh length of compatible line and wind it in the direction marked by the arrow on the spool. Keep each wrap beside the previous one instead of crossing over it. Wind firmly enough to prevent loose loops, but do not stretch the line tightly or pack it so hard that the wraps bind.

Leave the correct amount of line outside the retaining slots or holes. Too much line can overload the head and increase rubbing against the guard; too little can make feeding difficult.

6. Reassemble and check the head

Seat the spool fully, route the ends through the eyelets, and make sure the cover locks into place. Before starting the trimmer, pull the line gently by hand. Overfilled or tightly wound spool

A spool with too much line can press against the housing and eyelets. Crossed wraps and excessive winding tension also increase friction and prevent smooth payout.

Dirty or damaged eyelets

Grass, dust, and melted plastic around the eyelets can pinch the line. Clean the head with a brush after disconnecting the power source. Replace damaged eyelets or the head if the line path has a sharp edge that repeatedly cuts or heats the line.

Old, brittle, or poor-quality line

Line can become brittle with age, sunlight, and heat. Brittle line tends to crack inside the head, while softer line may be more prone to sticking. If a spool has been stored for a long time or repeatedly overheated, discard the line and reload with fresh, compatible trimmer line.

Heavy cutting conditions

Long, continuous cuts in thick weeds can keep the head under high load. Let the trimmer work at its intended speed, avoid forcing it into dense vegetation, and use a brush-cutter blade only when the tool is designed for that attachment and the manufacturer permits it.

Replace the spool when it is cracked, warped, melted, or no longer holds the line securely. Replace the complete head when the eyelets are damaged, the cover will not lock, or the spool binds even with the correct line loaded properly.

If fresh, correctly sized line keeps welding after the head is clean and correctly assembled, the head may be generating abnormal friction or the trimmer may be overloaded.
