How long to leave line out of the cut guard

String trimmer line should normally extend only to the guard’s cutoff blade, which trims it to the correct working length. Here is how to set it safely and what to do if your trimmer has no blade.

The line should generally extend from the trimmer head to the guard’s cutoff blade—not far beyond it. With the trimmer switched off and disconnected from its battery, pull each line end out until it reaches the blade, then let the blade trim any excess when the head spins. The exact length depends on the trimmer, head, line diameter, and manufacturer instructions.

How far should trimmer line extend?

On most string trimmers, the guard-mounted cutoff blade determines the maximum safe line length. The working end of the line should reach the blade or extend only slightly past it before trimming.

Do not judge the length by how far the line sticks out from the spool alone. Measure from the line’s exit point in the trimmer head to the cutoff blade. Both line ends should be approximately the same length.

A line that extends well beyond the blade can:

  • Strike the guard, nearby objects, or your legs
  • Overload the motor
  • Reduce battery runtime
  • Break more easily
  • Create a greater risk of thrown debris

A line that is too short will still work, but it will cut a narrower path and may make it harder to trim efficiently.

How to set the line length safely

  1. Turn the trimmer off. Remove the battery or unplug the trimmer. For a gas model, shut it down and follow the manufacturer’s procedure to prevent accidental starting.
  2. Wait for the head to stop completely. Never adjust line while the head is coasting.
  3. Inspect the guard and cutoff blade. Make sure the blade is installed, secure, and not covered by grass or debris.
  4. Pull the line out evenly. For a bump-feed or automatic-feed head, advance both ends until they reach the cutoff blade.
  5. Trim excess only with the installed blade. Do not use scissors or a knife while the head is connected to power.
  6. Check the guard. The line should not be long enough to pass substantially beyond the guard’s intended cutting boundary.

After starting the trimmer, the rotating head should bring the line against the cutoff blade. The blade then cuts the line to the length specified for that trimmer.

What if the line is longer than the guard?

Stop using the trimmer and disconnect its power source. Long line usually means the head was over-advanced, the cutoff blade is missing or damaged, or the line was installed incorrectly.

Check these items:

  • Cutoff blade: Confirm that the small blade on the guard is present and sharp enough to cut the line.
  • Guard installation: Make sure the guard is the correct one for the trimmer and is mounted in the required position.
  • Line diameter: Verify that the installed line matches the diameter listed in the owner’s manual. Oversized line may not cut properly and can overload the motor.
  • Spool installation: Check that the spool and cap are seated correctly and that the line is wound in the correct direction.
  • Manual advance: If the head uses a bump button, advance only a small amount at a time rather than pulling out a long section.

Replace a missing or badly damaged cutoff blade before operating the trimmer. Do not rely on the guard alone to limit line length.

What if the line does not reach the cutoff blade?

Short line is usually not a safety problem, but it reduces the cutting diameter. Advance a small amount according to the head’s instructions. On a manual-feed head, pull out equal lengths on both sides.

If the line repeatedly retracts into the head, look for:

  • Line wound in the wrong direction
  • Line trapped under another layer
  • A spool that is overfilled
  • Line that is fused together from heat
  • A cracked spool, worn eyelet, or damaged bump button

If the spool is damaged or the line repeatedly feeds incorrectly after rewinding, replacing the spool or head may be more practical than continuing to adjust it.

Trimmers without a cutoff blade

Some trimmers do not have a guard-mounted cutoff blade, especially certain compact or specialized models. In that case, do not assume that the line should extend to the edge of the guard. Use the line length and head setup specified by the manufacturer.

If the cutoff blade has been removed, do not operate the trimmer until you confirm that the manufacturer permits that configuration. The blade may be part of the trimmer’s safety design and may also protect the motor from excessive load.

Choosing the correct replacement line

Line length and line diameter are separate specifications. A thicker line is not automatically better. It may cut heavier weeds, but it can require more motor power and may be unsuitable for a light-duty or battery trimmer.

Check the owner’s manual or markings on the head for:

  • Approved line diameter
  • Compatible line shape, such as round, twisted, or multi-sided
  • Maximum spool capacity
  • Recommended loading method
  • Whether the head accepts one continuous length or pre-cut pieces

Use only the line size and type approved for the trimmer. If the cutoff blade cannot trim the line cleanly, stop and inspect the blade, line size, and spool installation before continuing.

FAQ

Should trimmer line touch the cutoff blade?

Yes. With the trimmer powered off, the line should normally be advanced to the guard’s cutoff blade so the blade can establish the correct working length. Follow the owner’s manual if it specifies a different setup.

How much line should stick out of a string trimmer head?

There is no universal measurement because heads and guards differ. The usual guide is the distance from the line exit point to the cutoff blade, with both ends approximately equal in length.

Can I use a string trimmer without the cutoff blade?

Do not assume it is safe. The blade limits line length and may help prevent motor overload. Replace it or confirm the manufacturer’s approved configuration before using the trimmer.

Why is my trimmer line too long after advancing it?

The line may have been over-advanced, or the cutoff blade may be missing, dull, clogged, or damaged. Disconnect power, inspect the blade and guard, and verify that the spool and line diameter match the manufacturer’s instructions.
