A string trimmer that will not start usually has a problem with its power supply, starting procedure, fuel, or cutting head. Start with the simplest checks: remove debris, confirm the battery or fuel supply, use the correct starting position, and inspect the switch and controls. Disconnect the battery or spark-plug wire before working near the trimmer head.

Start with basic safety and setup

Before troubleshooting:

  • Move the trimmer outdoors or into a well-ventilated area.
  • Keep the cutting head away from people, pets, and loose objects.
  • Set the stop switch to Run or On.
  • Make sure the throttle or safety lock is being held as the manufacturer requires.
  • Remove the battery, unplug the cord, or disconnect the spark-plug wire before clearing a jam.
  • Do not bypass a safety switch or continue operating a trimmer with damaged wiring, guards, or controls.

If the trimmer smells strongly of fuel, stop trying to start it and allow it to air out. Repeated starting attempts can flood a gas engine.

Check the cutting head for a jam

A packed head can make the motor or engine appear unable to start, or it may stop immediately after starting.

  1. Turn the trimmer off and disconnect its power source.
  2. Remove grass, vines, string, and dirt wrapped around the head or drive shaft.
  3. Check that the spool turns freely by hand without forcing it.
  4. Look for line that is too long, welded together, or incorrectly wound.
  5. Reinstall the spool, cap, and guard according to the manual.

If the head remains locked after debris is removed, the spool, bearing, clutch, or drive shaft may be damaged. Do not keep pulling the starter or holding the trigger; replace the damaged part or have the trimmer serviced.

For a battery string trimmer

If there is no sound or response at all, check the electrical supply first:

  • Confirm the battery is charged and compatible with the trimmer.
  • Remove and reinstall the battery until it is fully seated.
  • Inspect the battery terminals for dirt, corrosion, moisture, or damage.
  • Try the manufacturer’s required start sequence, which may include pressing a lockout button before the trigger.
  • Check whether the battery or charger is unusually hot. Let it cool before trying again.
  • If available, try a known-good compatible battery. Do not use a battery that is swollen, cracked, leaking, or visibly damaged.

A flashing indicator can point to an overheated battery, overload, low charge, or control fault. Use the owner’s manual to interpret the indicator rather than repeatedly cycling the trigger.

If a charged, compatible battery produces no response and the controls are correctly engaged, the trigger, switch, wiring, or motor controller may need service. Battery replacement is reasonable when the battery will not accept a charge or quickly drops out under normal use; replace the trimmer only after confirming the battery and charger are not the cause.

For a gas string trimmer

Check the fuel

Old or contaminated fuel is a common reason a gas trimmer will not start, especially after storage. Confirm that:

  • The tank contains the fuel mixture specified by the manufacturer.
  • The fuel is fresh and has not been stored beyond the period recommended in the manual.
  • The fuel is not cloudy, separated, or contaminated with water.
  • The fuel cap vent and tank area are not blocked by dirt.

Do not guess at the oil-to-gas ratio for a two-stroke engine. Use the mixture specified for that model, or the correct premixed fuel if the manufacturer allows it. Drain and replace questionable fuel according to the manual.

Use the correct starting procedure

Cold and warm engines often require different settings. A typical cold-start sequence may involve setting the switch to Run, pressing the primer bulb several times, engaging the choke, and pulling the starter until the engine briefly fires. The choke is then opened before continuing.

The exact sequence varies. Too much priming or leaving the choke engaged after the engine fires can flood the engine. If you suspect flooding, follow the manual’s clear-flood procedure and wait several minutes before trying again.

Inspect the air filter and spark plug

A severely dirty air filter can restrict airflow. Remove and inspect it only as directed by the manufacturer; some filters can be cleaned, while others must be replaced.

A wet, heavily carboned, cracked, or damaged spark plug can also prevent ignition. With the spark-plug wire disconnected, inspect the plug and replace it with the specified type if necessary. Do not test ignition near spilled fuel or fuel vapors.

If a replacement plug does not solve the problem, further ignition, compression, or carburetor diagnosis may require special tools. A qualified small-engine technician is the safer next step.

For a corded string trimmer

Check the outlet, extension cord, and connection points:

  • Confirm the outlet has power using another suitable device.
  • Reset a tripped GFCI or circuit breaker if safe to do so.
  • Use an extension cord that meets the trimmer manufacturer’s length and gauge requirements.
  • Inspect the cord for cuts, crushed sections, exposed conductors, or heat damage.
  • Make sure the plug and cord-retention feature are connected correctly.

Do not use a damaged cord or defeat a GFCI. If the outlet and cord are sound but the trimmer remains completely unresponsive, the trigger, switch, thermal protector, or motor may have failed.

If the trimmer starts and then stops

A trimmer that briefly starts often has a fuel, airflow, overheating, or overload issue. Check for:

  • A clogged air filter or fuel filter
  • Stale fuel or an incorrect fuel mixture
  • A blocked fuel line or tank vent
  • Choke left on after startup
  • Grass wrapped around the head or shaft
  • A battery that is too hot, too cold, or unable to deliver current
  • A motor or engine that is overheating

Let the unit cool, clear the head, and retry it using the prescribed procedure. If it stops repeatedly with a clear head and fresh fuel or a known-good battery, stop using it until the cause is repaired.

When to replace a part or the trimmer

Replace a consumable part when the fault is clear: a damaged spool, incorrect or fused line, unusable battery, dirty filter, damaged spark plug, or compromised extension cord. Use parts specified as compatible with the exact trimmer model.

A replacement trimmer may make more sense when the unit has multiple failures, a damaged motor or engine, cracked housing, unsafe wiring, or repair costs that approach the cost of a suitable new unit. For fuel-system, ignition, or electrical faults that are not resolved by the basic checks above, use an authorized service center or qualified technician.
